Origin
Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley is a relatively small wine region. With steep, gravelly hillsides on either side of the narrow valley, it runs roughly from southwest to northeast, linking the cool hills of the Russian River Valley to the hot inland foothills of Alexander Valley. Dry Creek Valley produces much of California's finest Zinfandel and some excellent Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Because it is essentially a moderate climate, a number of other grapes also flourish in Dry Creek Valley, from Syrah and Grenache to Chardonnay.
Pairings
Chardonnay has ample body, especially when conditioned in oak barrels, as is often done. Not a terribly aromatic variety, Chardonnay imparts richer nut, toast, vanilla and smoke notes by barrel maturation, making it a good foil for scallops sautéed in browned butter, sole amandine, or roast chicken seasoned with lemon, cumin and coriander.

Serve chilled (52°F).
Winemaker
Jay Abbe retired in 2001 after working as a senior executive at a series of Silicon Valley businesses, including Raychem Corporation and JDS Uniphase. He and his wife, Karen, bought the property now known as Abbe Ranch in Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley, and, in addition to growing wine grapes for others, they produce a small amount of wine under their own Abbe Ranch label. Jay Abbe also serves on the board of directors of the Santa Rosa Symphony.
The Wine
Finding a comfortable middle ground between bombastic, heavily oaked Chardonnays and austere, unoaked examples, the Abbe Ranch Chardonnay displays pineapple, almond, Asian pear, smoke and orange blossom aromas and flavors of ripe Bosc pears, red apples, lemon curd and hazelnuts.
