Behind The Scenes

First, and foremost, we are a group of people that love wine and everything about it. We also know the savvy readers of The New York Times deserve access to some of the best and most unique expressions of varieties and terroir you can find in great wine.

This is why we make it our mission to find not only great tasting wines but wines from respected wineries that represent the regions from which they come. And every one of these wines has a story worth telling – stories that truly enhance the experience of enjoying them with family and friends.

Our team is comprised of seasoned wine professionals including a Master of Wine (one of only roughly 300 in the world!), certified sommeliers, a chef with an incredible knack for pairing wine and food, and devoted people who have spent the bulk of their careers in the wine industry.

Wine Selection Process

How does The New York Times Wine Club select the wine in your club shipments?

Our stellar team of wine professionals, with over 115 years of combined experience, basically locks themselves up in a room to taste through thousands of wines from all over the world. Using a proprietary evaluation process, the team must reacha consensus on whether a wine is deemed fit for the club. Each wine is passionately debated and judged for its typicity, balance and value, among other factors, ensuring you only receive the very best wine available.

Here are some quick stats about our wine selection process:

  • Thousands of wines are tasted with only the top 2% actually selected for our club. Yes, we are that picky.
  • Our wine buying team travels to international wine fairs in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, South America and beyond and sources the best wine from over 13 countries.
  • Over 15% of the wines in our shipments are exclusive to The New York Times Wine Club and cannot be found anywhere else in the U.S., giving you insider access to hard-to-find wines.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, for all sales in New York, Boomtown Wine & Spirits will select the wines featured for any wine offering.

Our wine team is comprised of devoted wine lovers who are some of the most respected professionals in the industry.

Tim Marson

As one of only roughly 300 Masters of Wine in the world, Tim has over 18 years of buying, sales and wine management experience with world-renowned UK retailers and importers. He is a highly sought-after wine judge and panel chair for top wine competitions, known for his masterful palate. Tim also holds a Diploma of Wines & Spirits.

Martin Reyes

To say Martin is obsessed with wine would be an understatement. Not only does he hold a Diploma of Wines & Spirits and is a Certified Sommelier and Certified Wine Educator, he is also currently enrolled in the Master of Wine program. Martin's background is in managing the buying programs for top wine merchants in Northern California.

Jennifer Ingellis

As one of the most widely recognized and respected wine professionals in Napa Valley, Jen has over sixteen years in the restaurant industry, including a stint as Food & Beverage Director for celebrity chef Cindy Pawlcyn’s award-winning restaurant group. In 2012, Jen was honored by FOOD & WINE magazine as one of their Sommeliers of the Year.

Mark Bowery

Mark’s love for wine began in college where he started his first cellar in his dorm room closet. Later on, he tested his tasting chops in the California Wine Tasting Championships, winning eight of thirteen attempts. He was the first Sommelier of the famed Masa’s restaurant, where Wine Spectator magazine (1986) named his wine list “one of the best in the world.”

Mary Burnham

Do you ever wonder who crafts the beautiful poetry of the tasting notes included in each wine club shipment? That would be the handiwork of Mary Burnham, a noted wine writer, tasting-panel judge and wine educator. An East Coast native with more than a decade of experience in the industry, Mary followed her passion for wine to California. She is the author of several highly regarded wine guides.
