The Bio Bio Valley is one of Chile's southernmost winegrowing regions. The farther south you travel from Santiago, the cooler and wetter the climate becomes, making Bio Bio a tricky place to make wine. Lately, winemakers with the requisite nerve and skill have been crafting some of Chile's finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in this relatively young winegrowing region. Agustinos's vineyards are farmed organically and planted primarily on the stone and clay soils that are best for growing wine grapes.
This zesty Chardonnay is crisp enough to match well with fresh seafood, from grilled shrimp to seared scallops or steamed lobster with clarified butter. But it also has enough body to pair with roast chicken or pork, especially dishes seasoned with citrus and herbs.
Agustinos's current winemaking team of Patrick Piuze and Rodrigo Romero represent the latest partnership between Burgundian and Chilean winemakers at this estate. Piuze is French-Canadian but has vast experience making Chablis at the domaine of Jean Marc Brocard in Burgundy. Romero is a native Chilean who has experience in Tuscany and Napa Valley as well as Chile's Bio Bio Valley.
Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Chile have improved enormously since winemakers began growing them in ever more appropriate microclimes. This cool-climate Chardonnay from Bio Bio has more than a bit of Burgundian character with zesty lemon-lime, tangerine, mineral and cardamom spice aromas and flavors of Meyer lemon, smoke, minerals and pastry.
