Origin
Burgenland forms a long, narrow strip along Austria's eastern border with Hungary. For a region so far north, it enjoys a surprisingly long growing season. It benefits from warm winds rising from the Pannonian Plains and regularly receives enough sunshine to ripen red grape varieties like Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. The Schreiner family owns some of the finest vineyards in Burgenland, which is now recognized for producing many of Austria's best red wines.
Pairings
Zweigelt's vibrancy and taut fruit character allow it to match well with a wide range of foods. Pâté and charcuterie and sliced deli meats, for example, work well. Schnitzel--a juicy cutlet pounded to perfection before being breaded and sautéed, is an ideal match, as is goulash, a Hungarian-influenced, paprika-spiced stew.

On a hot day, serve lightly chilled (55°F).
Winemaker
Alex Schreiner is part of a new generation of young energetic Austrian winemakers who intuitively meld new age methods with the region's traditional approaches. Trained as an engineer and as a winemaker, Alex brings curiosity, creativity and passion to his craft.
The Wine
Zweigelt is a cross of two other grape varieties: St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. First grafted in 1922, it was originally known as Rotburger, but the name was later changed to honor its creator--Dr. Fritz Zweigelt. Reminescent of a spicy, herb-tinged Beaujolais, the 2008 AlexS is a fresh, invigorating warm-weather red showcasing quintessential Zweigelt characteristics: black cherry, blue plum, conifer, graphite, cracked pepper and a floral note that registers somewhere between violet and lavender blossom.
