Origin
Riesling arguably reaches its greatest heights on the precipitous slopes of Germany’s famous river valleys. This estate was founded by the Altenkirch family in 1826 to supply wine to the family’s hotel, “Der Schwan.” The estate was acquired in 1934 by Dr. Franz Breuer from Rüdesheim and was operated by his widow after his death. In 1994, his daughter, Franziska Breuer-Hadwiger, took control and brought in additional investors. The 50 acres of steeply sloped vineyards are planted mostly to Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Pairings
Being sharp in tone and crisply off-dry, the 2007 Altenkirch will lend exciting contrast to spicy, salty, smoked or wellseasoned preparations, as well as more simply prepared seafood and poultry dishes. Its elevated acidity levels respond favorably to higher-acid ingredients such as goat cheese, tomatoes and citrus fruits, but the wine also has the body to counterbalance rich sauces and fattier foods.

Serve chilled (47°F)
Winemaker
Altenkirch’s wines are made by the Japanese-born, German-educated oenologist Tomoko Kuriyama, who has garnered praise for her clean, focused and keenly balanced wines. Altenkirch practices sustainable farming, and yields are naturally very low, delivering flavorful fruit. Grapes are hand-picked and fermented with native yeast in the cool cellar. The Riesling is made in clean stainless-steel tanks to bring out the natural bright fruit and minerality that comes from the famous slate of the Schlossberg vineyard.
The Wine
Complex aromatics are apparent in this four-year-old wine, with a nose bursting with hints of honeycomb, clover, apricot and tarragon. Stone fruits predominate in the mouth—just-ripe peaches and nectarines with a backing of tangy kumquat. The wine is technically off-dry but favors the side of edgy crispness. Still, it shows a wonderfully robust palate and a long, deep, penetrating finish.
