Origin
The cool climate of Germany produces Pinot Noir (called "Spätburgunder") that is spicy and delicate with relatively low alcohol. This estate was founded by the Altenkirch family in 1826 specifically to supply wine to the family's hotel, "Der Schwan." The estate was acquired in 1934 by Dr. Franz Breuer from Rüdesheim and was operated by his widow after his death. In 1994, his daughter, Franziska Breuer-Hadwiger, took control and brought in additional investors. The 50 acres of steeply sloped vineyards are planted mostly to Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Pairings
This is a great red to serve with seafood or other relatively light dishes with hints of smoke, spice or earth, like a smoked salmon salad, a BLT sandwich, quiche Lorraine or a savory root vegetable or mushroom soup.

Serve at cellar temperature (60°F).
Winemaker
Altenkirch's wines are made by Japanese-born, German-educated oenologist Tomoko Kuriyama, who has garnered praise for her clean, focused and keenly balanced wines. Altenkirch practices sustainable farming, and yields are naturally very low, delivering flavorful fruit. Grapes are hand picked and fermented with native yeast in the cool cellar. This Pinot Noir was matured in a combination of large neutral oak tanks and smaller barriques, which impart more pronounced spice and toast notes.
The Wine
This bright, relatively low-alcohol Pinot Noir has aromas of black pepper, anise, black cherry, strawberry and cinnamon, and lucid baked-plum, raspberry, licorice, graphite and clove flavors finishing with taut minerality and subtle vanilla and toast notes.
