Origin
Sardinia's star is on the rise as Italian cuisine becomes ever more regional and sommeliers seek out unique wines for their lists. Officially, Sardinia belongs to Italy, but it has always been heavily influenced by Spanish Catalunya. Cannonau (Grenache) is a popular red grape in Sardinia, and Vermentino is the primary white, but there are many indigenous varieties grown alongside international grapes like Cabernet and Merlot.
Pairings
Locals enjoy Cagnulari with both fish and meat, but this example is better in quality and a bit more concentrated than most. It will pair well with grilled tuna with a balsamic glaze, roast pork loin seasoned with mustard and herbs, or spicy sausages.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Antonella Leda d'Ittiri's 45-acre estate of is located just a few kilometers away from the beach town of Alghero in northwest Sardinia, at the foot of Monte Doglia. Antonella and her daughter, Annamaria, manage every aspect of the property, growing olives and wine grapes using biodynamic farming techniques. Soon one of the two farmhouses on the estate will become a working agritourismo, where travelers will be able to vacation and taste the estate's exceptional wines and olive oils.
The Wine
This wine is named for the chirping insects that sing all evening in Sardinia; cigala means "cicada" in the local Catalan dialect. Made from Cagnulari grapes, the wine has black cherry, blackberry, ash, dried rosemary and oregano, tobacco and cola aromas and deep blackberry fruit flavors with notes of apple skin, kirsch and graphite, finishing with moderate tannin.
