Origin
Le Marche is a gorgeous region tucked amidst Umbria, Emilia-Romagna and Abruzzo, with a long coastline on the Adriatic. Just a bit inland from the coast, the terrain turns to rolling, tree-covered hillsides—the backbone of the Apennine mountain range. Here the clay and limestone soils are optimal for winegrowing, mainly the varieties of Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes on which Le Marche bases its reds.
Pairings
The accessible fruit and spice of this wine make it wonderfully versatile when it comes to food. You can match this unique red with medium-weight dishes, especially ones that include tomatoes and dried herbs, like sausage pizza and eggplant parmigiana. Or you can easily pair it with heavier meats like steak, pork or lamb. Don’t be afraid to play to the wine’s spicy nature by using peppercorns or even mild chilies.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F) after decanting for half an hour.
Winemaker
Cantine Belisario is best known in Italy as one of the biggest producers of Verdicchio di Matelica, a wonderfully mineral white wine with a medium body and brash acidity. But the winery, which was founded in 1971, doesn’t only dabble in reds, as this wine proves; rather it takes them very seriously. Here, Sangiovese provides the majority of the juice, meaning bright flavors and good acidity. The balance of Cabernet, Merlot and the obscure native variety Ciliegiolo offer depth and structure. To highlight the fruit, the wine is fermented in stainless steel before moving to a large oak cask where it matures and mellows.
The Wine
Bright scents of red plums and currants are enlivened by floral notes of hibiscus, white pepper and lavender. In the mouth, the ripe, juicy plum notes are pronounced and garnished with suggestions of orange peel, white pepper and cranberry. The wine has notable energy with a brightness that is as surprising as it is delightful.
