Origin
Located between Madrid and Barcelona, Calatayud’s landscape is dotted with crumbling castles, and its terroir is just about perfect for growing Garnacha (Grenache). Among craggy mountains, vineyards hang at altitudes of 1,500 to 3,000 feet. The climate here is continental, with hot summers and brutally cold winters. Most importantly, soils are a rocky terrain of red and white slate backed by chalk-rich clay. Garnacha, a vigorous vine, needs these mineral-rich, well- draining soils to keep its vegetal growth in check and concentrate its energy into producing complex fruit.
Pairings
This boldly flavored, juicy red is a good match for barbecued ribs, grilled steak or even sautéed duck breast with a cherry reduction. For pairings with a Spanish flair, pair it with deep, smoky paella cooked on a grill and layered with rich, earthy chorizo.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Founded in 1965, Bodega San Gregorio is a winery cooperative boasting around 250 local growers as members. While many of these growers have lived in the region for generations and tend ancient vineyards, the cooperative itself is manned by young winemakers well schooled in a modern array of winemaking techniques and styles. The results of this collaboration between old and new are wines that have the unique stamp of Calatayud’s distinctive terroir but also a modern sensibility marked by balance, a fine texture and smooth tannins.
The Wine
Armantes is made from vines that average 50 years of age, head-trained in the ancient bush-vine style and dry-farmed on soils rich in limestone, slate and marl. Garnacha thrives on such rocks, producing wines deep in color and aroma, such as the Armantes. Waves of black cherry and raspberry are apparent on the nose, backed by hints of tobacco, chocolate and black tea. With marked energy, the wine displays a bright palate with firm but fine-grained tannins that carry the fruit deep into the finish.
