Origin
The winemaking tradition in Bierzo is at once very new and very old. This region, just east of Galicia in the northwest corner of Spain, was granted its Denomination of origin in 1989—which brought greater attention to the area—but viticulture here dates back to the Romans. The most significant grape here is the unusual Mencía, a unique variety of unknown origin. In this hilly landscape with a climate combining Galicia’s rain and Castille-León’s heat, it produces singular reds with some of the lightness and brightness of Pinot Noir, as well as the structure and earthiness of Syrah.
Pairings
Mencía can be one of the world’s most flexible red wines when it comes to pairings. On one hand, it often displays bright red fruit, hints of wildflowers and good acidity almost reminiscent of Pinot Noir, making it a good match with poultry, fowl, pork and lighter meats. On the other hand, it can be a surprisingly tannic wine with strong acidity and deep concentration, allowing it to work with heavier meats like beef, lamb and game.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
The Frias family started Bodegas Estefanía in 1999 by converting an old dairy in a small Bierzo town into their current facility. From the beginning, the goal was to turn out mono-varietal wines from Mencía that reflect both the grape and the unusual schist- and quartzladen vineyards in which it thrives. To this end, they found a wealth of old vines, including vineyards more than 100 years old. Bodegas Estefanía’s main line of wines is called Tilenus, inspired by an ancient Roman coin discovered in one of the vineyards, and named for one of the region’s ancient gods.
The Wine
The Bodegas Estefanía Tilenus Envejecido en Roble comes from 40- to 60-yearold vines. It’s aged in a combination of French and American oak for about 10 months before being aged in bottle until the wine is deemed ready. Quite often, these powerful wines need a few years to come around, as this young-drinking 2006 shows. Here, aromas of red fruits mix with a heady mélange of earth and forest scents, backed with notes of espresso and vanilla. In the mouth, spice and tea flavors emerge behind the potent fruit. The wine is polished, but still retains a rustic character that adds intrigue and accessibility.
