Origin
Ribera del Duero, a high-plains region in central Spain, has been one of the driving forces of the Spanish wine revolution of the last 20 years. Its best wines are emblematic of the new Spain: they are thoroughly modern and highly crafted but still taste of their place of origin. Ribera’s altitude brings warm days and cool nights, while dry-farmed vines reach deep into the chalky clay soils for water and nutrients. Ribera’s reds are made with Tinto Fino, the local name for Spain’s noble grape Tempranillo, known for creating full-bodied wines that typically lack harsh, drying tannins.
Pairings
The concentrated flavors, smoky accents and tannic structure of this wine call for hearty meats with bold seasonings. Roasts and stews traditional to Spain, particularly those featuring pork, lamb or spicy chorizo, make a fine place to start. Or, think of those ingredients in the wonderful char of a paella cooked over a fire. Grilled peppers, thick-cut steaks or a roast leg of lamb will also stand up to the wine without overwhelming it.

Serve at cool foom temperature (64°F).
Decant for two hours before serving.
Winemaker
Bodega del Palacio de los Frontaura y Victoria, also referred to simply as Bodegas Frontaura, is a family-owned winery in the town of Villabuena del Puente in the wine region of Toro. The families of Frontaura and Victoria have been important in Toro winemaking going back all the way to the 1600s. The name of the wine brand comes from the name engraved above the doorway to the family’s ancient palace, whose restoration into a tasting room and art gallery was part of the wine brand’s redevelopment process. A modern winery was also constructed, and the fusion of the ancient and the modern has also become a good way to describe the family’s winemaking.
The Wine
While the heart of Bodegas Frontaura is in Toro, the family also has holdings in the more famous neighboring region of Ribera del Duero, where this Tempranillo comes from. In Spain these days, a wine labeled “cosecha” indicates a young wine, intended for early consumption. However, in the past, young Toro or Ribera wines meant a burly, rough-andtumble affair. Today, modern winemaking techniques have allowed producers to smooth and polish Tempranillo’s rugged tannins while accentuating the dark blackberry fruit and its spicy, savory accents. With air, the wine’s focal point expands into its plush, sturdy mid-palate and the pleasures of young, powerful Tempranillo become apparent.
