Origin
The 2008 Dacu is made entirely from Tempranillo grapes grown in the Ribera del Guadiana zone of southwest Spain's Extremadura region. The climate is hot and dry, and the lean soil isn't ideal for growing much besides grapes and olives. Today, contemporary growing and winemaking techniques coax ripe, fruit-driven wines like this one from rugged high-altitude vineyards with clay and limestone soils.
Pairings
Tempranillo is often compared to Pinot Noir, but it arguably handles garlic and spices even more gracefully, making it a great match for most grilled or braised lamb recipes and grilled meat with Middle Eastern or North African spices. It's a perfect complement to grilled sausage.

Serve at cellar temperature (61°F).
Winemaker
Bodegas Ortiz is a family-owned estate that was founded in 1940 in Rioja. Today, the company is run by the third generation and is dedicated to growing, making and maturing wines that display a distinctly Spanish combination of tradition and modernity. Winemakers Alberto Orte and Iñaki Otegi make only about 1,000 cases of this wine annually, primarily for sale in the United States. Vinified with skill, this Tempranillo is a great illustration of the value that contemporary Spanish wines often deliver.
The Wine
Ripe and juicy, this red has generous plum, black cherry, red currant, cardamom, allspice, leather and vanilla aromas, and flavors of black cherry jam, baked plums, clove and cinnamon. There are notes of tar, a dusty earthiness and a nice twist of tannin on the finish.
