Winemaker
The Martínez Bujanda family has been growing grapes and making wine in Rioja since 1889. With more than 1,000 acres under vine, Bodegas Valdemar has extentive vineyard holdings in all three of Rioja’s sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. This gives winemakers absolute control over the quality of the grapes. Today, the Bodegas Valdemar winery, located along the banks of the Ebro River in the town of Oyon, is a state-of-the-art facility. Under the leadership of fifth-generation Carlos Martínez Bujanda Mora, Bodegas Valdemar is helping to redefine the style of Rioja, moving away from oak-dominated offerings and toward a fresher, more fruit-driven style.
The Wine
Tempranillo forms the foundation of red Rioja wines but, according to Spanish wine laws, three other grape varieties are allowed in the wines, including Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. The 2006 Inspiración Valdemar is comprised of 90 percent Tempranillo and 10 percent Graciano and was aged for nine months in both French and American oak. It features lovely flavors and aromas of cherry, red currant, tobacco leaf, light leather, cocoa, cinnamon, clove and measured amounts of toasty vanilla. Elegant and harmonious on the palate, it offers excellent intensity, plenty of savory flavors and remarkable depth and length, especially considering its modest price.
