This fine Riesling comes from Alsace, which lies just across the Rhine River from Germany. The vineyards of Alsace are planted in the Vosges Mountain foothills, mostly facing west and south for optimum sun exposure. Fifty-one vineyards in Alsace have "grand cru" status, including the 30-acre vineyard known as Wiebelsberg. The site's exceptional sandstone and quartz soils produce especially elegant and long-lived Rieslings.
This is a versatile food wine. It's a great match for trout or other river fish but is also one of the few wines that pair well with Indian or Southeast Asian coconut curries.
The house of Emile Boeckel was established in the town of Mittelbergheim (Alsace) in 1853, but the Boeckel family actually traces its roots here back some 400 years. Today the estate is run by Jean Daniel Boeckel, who continues the family tradition of producing refined, finely structured white wines from several grand cru vineyards in the northern reaches of Alsace. The estate's cellar is famous for the unique miniature railway line built in the 1950s to transport barrels, bottles and equipment through its tunnels.
Alsace Riesling is typically very dry, with just a hint of sweetness to the aromas and only a few grams of residual sugar in the wine. This one has honeysuckle, peach, apricot, orange zest and candied pineapple aromas, and flavors of stone fruit, lemon curd, honeycomb and hazelnut. It's concentrated but has plenty of finesse.
