Origin
Alto Adige, which borders Austria, is Italy's northernmost region. The Dolomite Alps rise up to surround the area, where meticulously kept vineyards blanket alpine valleys at elevations of up to 3,600 feet. While Alto Adige actually produces mostly red wines, it is best known for its white wines--most notably crisp and lively Pinot Grigio.
Pairings
Pinot Grigo is an excellent aperitif and all-purpose wine for appetizers and lunches. As a companion to food, its steely-mineral character and brisk acidity is ideally suited to delicate seafood and shellfish dishes. It also offers contrast to heavier seafood preparations and works well with nutty or smoked cheeses.

Serve chilled (52°F).
Winemaker
Cantina Cortaccia is a cooperative comprised of many small growers that bring precision to both their viticulture and winemaking. A broad array of both mountain and valley vineyard sources allows them to combine creamy suppleness with penetrating focus. By placing an emphasis on reducing yields and producing more concentrated, flavorful wines, the group has carefully honed an international reputation for consistency and quality.
The Wine
Pinot Grigio, also known as Pinot Gris, Rulander and Grauburgunder, was first brought to the region from Burgundy by Archduke Johann of Austria in 1852--and it has been quite at home in Alto Adige ever since. This lively wine zooms into focus with varietal perfume of melon, underripe pineapple, freshly picked MacIntosh apples and lime blossom. Crisp yet supple on the palate, more pear, apple and pineapple fruit mingles with notes of almond and mineral.
