Origin
Since the 1980s, the leading winegrowers of Mendoza, in the foothills of the towering Andes Mountains, have improved Argentine red wines by leaps and bounds. The desertlike climate has proven ideal for Malbec, a grape native to southwestern France, and winegrowers have continued to improve the quality of other grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The rocky soils and high-altitude vineyards of the Uco Valley subregion of Mendoza are producing many of Argentina's finest red wines.
Pairings
Grassfed beef is a natural choice for many Mendoza reds, and in this case an espresso-based rub would make the match even better. Beef Wellington or juniper-spiced venison are also great options.

Serve at cellar temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Originally from Genoa, Italy, the Basso family has been producing wine in Argentina since 1922. They owned the Purísima winery, where they sold wine in 220-liter wooden barrels for domestic consumption. Then, in 1935, Adolfo Basso, together with his brother Tulio, purchased the Santa Ana winery and grew it into one of Argentina's largest bodegas. In 1996 they sold Santa Ana and purchased a smaller winery in Mendoza with the aim of making smaller-production, higher-quality wines. Today all Carlos Basso wines are estate bottled, and the property is run by Carlos and his son Adolfo.
The Wine
This bold, ripe red is composed of the top four red grapes of Mendoza and really showcases the blending skill of the vintner. It has deep aromas of vanilla, lavender, mint, crème de cassis, black cherry and cocoa and has generous black and red-fruit flavors with black tea, graphite and mocha notes on the finish.
