Origin
Chile's Colchagua Valley lies within the larger wine region of Rapel, about 80 miles south of Santiago. Colchagua has a moderately warm climate and mixed clay, loam and sandstone soils that produce red wines of great finesse. The red grape varietal Carménère was brought to Chile from Bordeaux in the 19th century. Many of the plantings in Chile were mistakenly believed to be Merlot until they were properly identified about 20 years ago. Now that the vines are better understood, Carménère makes some of Chile's most stylish red wines.
Pairings
Carménère is a robust red with ample structure that fairly begs to be paired with red meat like lamb or beef. It also has a peppery, sometimes brambly herbaceous note that makes it a good match for grilled steaks with crushed red and black pepper, smoky beef ribs or lamb rib chops marinated in red wine and bay leaves, then grilled.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Carma is a relatively young brand founded by veteran wine marketer Keith Johnsen. The grapes come from the winery's estate vineyard within an area called Palmilla, a region considered to be "in the center of gravity" when it comes to Chilean red wine. In his 30 years of working in the beverage alcohol business, Johnsen developed several domestic and international wine brands and has forged successful partnerships with artisanal producers around the world.
The Wine
This dry red has aromas of lavender, orange zest, black cherry, cassis and dark chocolate, and spicy black and red fruit flavors with notes of violet, fresh rosemary and coffee that demonstrate Carménère's distinctive personality. It's a deep, generous wine with great overall balance.
