This wine comes from Saint-Emilion, one of the most prestigious communes in Bordeaux. Located on the right bank of the Dordogne river, this area specializes in the production of Merlot, which is often blended with a smaller amount of Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc. The soils on the plateau of Saint-Emilion are comprised of limestone and clay, a composition well-suited for growing exceptional Merlot.
Pair Bordeaux with protein-rich lamb or beef to soften the wine's stiff, tannic grip. The simpler the food, the more the complexity of the wine will shine through.
In recent years, the proprietor of Château La Bienfaisance has employed the extraordinary talents of star Bordeaux winemaking consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt. The quality of its wines is higher than ever and continuing to improve, making this château a rising star and the wine a superb value by Bordelais standards.
Cool vintages, like 2004, are said to favor the Merlot of the right bank of the Dordogne River over the Cabernet Sauvignon of the Medoc on the left bank, because Merlot requires less heat and ripens earlier than Cabernet Sauvignon. This vintage has lavender, violet, black cherry, leather, plum and graphite aromas and concentrated black currant, mint, hibiscus and date flavors with ample tannins on the finish.
