Origin
The balmy weather and clay and limestone soils of the Côtes du Rhône, an expansive region in the southern Rhône River valley, routinely produce some of the best values in the world. Côtes du Rhône wines are generally made from a mix of grapes: Grenache almost always plays the lead role, giving the wines juicy fruit and a slightly spicy character. The grapes used to make this wine come from Château Rayas and its sister estate, La Fonsalette.
Pairings
Try this Rhône blend with a flavorful, medium-weight meat course. Pork, either grilled chops or slow-cooked pork shoulder seasoned with mustard or Moroccan spices, is an excellent match, as are duck confit or roast chicken with Provençal herbs.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Châteauneuf-du-Pape's Château Rayas is one of the most highly esteemed estates in the southern Rhône. The legendary Jacques Reynaud owned Rayas and made its wines until his death in 1977. He had no heirs, and the estate passed to his nephew, Emmanuel Reynaud, who also owns Château des Tours in Vacuqeyras. Fortunately, Emmanuel shares his uncle's passion and deft touch and continues to produce extraordinary wines at both estates.
The Wine
La Pialade is a classic Côtes du Rhône but has more serious structure and is more age-worthy than most. It shows spicy aromas of red cherry, plum and bright raspberry fruit with tangy orange, clove and allspice notes. In the mouth, it has deep raspberry, smoke, baking spice and chocolate flavors.
