The Côteaux du Languedoc appellation covers a broad swath of the south-central Meditrerranean coast of France. Pic St. Loup is within that area, just slightly inland, and is famous for producing especially lithe, delicate and elegant red wines that come from its relatively cool climate and marine limestone soils. Grenache, Syrah, Carignane and other Mediterranean grapes flourish here and are often blended together to make some of the region's best wines.
Dishes with fresh herbs or lots of black pepper are good matches for this Mediterranean red, especially medium-weight pork, chicken and duck recipes.
The Château de Lancyre estate is comprised of about 190 acres, approximately 150 of which are planted with high-quality grape varieties within the highly regarded Pic St. Loup appellation. Since the 1970s, the vineyards have been in perpetual evolution as the owners have actively updated the vineyards with better grapes and improved the viticultural techniques used to farm them.
This formidable Languedoc red shows lilac, blood orange, boysenberry, blackberry and smoked meat aromas, then black currant, blackberry, tar, white pepper and bergamot flavors. It's fresh but full of bright fruit, with firm tannins and lingering peppery notes on the finish.
