Origin
Jurançon is a remarkable region that is little known to wine lovers outside of France. It’s located in the southwest, in the rugged foothills of the Pyrenees, which tower majestically behind the vineyards. The most famous wines of Jurançon are sweet, but the area also produces delectably dry, minerally whites made from obscure varieties like Gros Manseng and Courbu. These tend to be robust yet crisp, fine-edged whites, good for all seasons and cuisines.
Pairings
Jurançon dry whites make for excellent aperitifs and all-purpose wines for appetizers and lunches. As a companion to food, this wine’s steely mineral character and brisk acidity make it ideally suited to delicate seafood and shellfish dishes. However, its density also offers a great match for heavier seafood preparations, poultry, pork and a variety of nutty or smoked cheeses.

Serve chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
Clos Thou’s history is ancient, likely taking its name from a certain Raymonde de Thou, a listed property owner in 1538, when vines were first recorded on the property. Now totaling close to 17 acres, the estate is run by Raoul and Henri Lapouble-Laplace, whose family has been growing the vines for four generations. The soils of Clos Thou include a measure of sedimentary stones unique to the region, which have weathered and tumbled down from the Pyrenees. These stones are known locally as “poudingues,” named after classic English steamed fruit pudding, which they are said to resemble.
The Wine
Like all the best dry Jurançon whites, the Clos Thou is a terrific combination of weight and fullness undercut by a refreshingly stiff acidity, minerality and depth. Aromas of apple, lemon blossom and dried herbs give way to flavors of roasted pineapple, green apple, apricot and a hint of coconut. The finish is bracingly dry and long.
