Origin
Côteaux de Languedoc, described as a giant southeastfacing amphitheater, is considered one of France’s most exciting wine regions. It stretches 120 miles east to west along the Mediterranean coast from the outskirts of Nimes to the gothic village of Narbonne, and inland to the slopes of the Cévennes Mountains. The hills around Poussan, located 12 miles south of Montpellier, are home to Clos de Nines, where a warm, sunny climate, coupled with clay-limestone soils, consistently produces ripe but sharply etched wines.
Pairings
This blend’s richness and opulent texture are similar to Chardonnay’s, while its alluring floral nuances are vaguely reminiscent of Gewürztraminer or Muscat. As such, this widely applicable wine pairs nicely with fullflavored, aromatic dishes. Working with everything from calamari salad to clove-studded ham, this multidimensional blend is a genial companion at potlucks and holiday gatherings. The Obladie Blanc will also work flawlessly with richly textured tubers, root vegetables and winter squashes. Also consider a fennel gratin, or butternut squash ravioli with brown butter and lemon sage.

Serve chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
In 2002, Isabelle Mangeart and Christian Marbler found everything they had dreamed of in a 25-acre estate along the Mediterranean coast of France. They fell in love with “the amazing light, nature and the small courtyard with vines and olive trees.” “Nines” means daughters in the traditional Languedoc dialect and the farm is named in tribute to their three daughters, Leslie, Penelope and Petula. Inspired by a love of nature, a passion for local tradition and an unbridled desire to create, Isabelle does everything from pruning to label design to winemaking. Christian, who kept his day job, is very supportive and assists with some of the heavier work, especially during harvest.
The Wine
The 2009 Clos des Nines Obladie is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Vermentino and Roussanne. Each variety was vinified separately before being combined in oak barrels where the wine coalesced and matured for six months. This careful treatment resulted in a complex, layered and yet cohesive wine. The time in wood also provides background notes of toasty vanilla against a foreground of white peach, underripe papaya, orange blossom, fennel and mineral. The estate’s chalky terroir is reflected in this rich and mouth-filling blend, which is rich and mouth-filling but finishes with bright acidity and a pleasing mineral snap. Total production: 1,800 bottles.
