Origin
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is located between Orange
and Avignon in France’s southern Rhône Valley. Its
name, meaning “new castle of the Pope,” refers to the
summer palace built to house the Pope when, in the
1300s, the papacy was moved to Avignon. In the early
1920s, Châteauneuf-du-Pape became the first French
region to adopt strict regulations for grape-growing
and winemaking, and later became a model for France’s
national Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée system.
Pairings
Combining complexity and freshness,
the 2009 Cuvée Unique is an excellent
example of a rich, full-bodied Grenachebased
wine. Its weight and texture make
it an ideal partner for robust and hearty
foods like lamb—chops, rack or rich
stews—but it can also support, without
overwhelming, lighter red meats or
feathered game. Ingredients that will
mesh nicely with this Châteauneuf-du-
Pape include mushrooms, rosemary,
lavender, thyme, roasted or sun-dried
tomatoes, kalamata olives and freshly
ground pepper.
Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
