Origin
Despite the fact that it’s located at the top of the country, the top dry-wine-producing region of Austria is called Niederösterreich, meaning “lower Austria.” This makes sense when you consider that a huge portion of this most scenic of countries is dominated by the Alps— so lower Austria doesn’t mean southern, it literally means lower in altitude, which of course helps make it suitable for viticulture. Kremstal, where this wine comes from, is located near the other top wine-producing regions, Wachau and Kamptal, just 40 miles west of Vienna.
Pairings
Zweigelt’s vibrancy and taut fruit character allow it to match well with a wide range of foods. Pâté and charcuterie and sliced deli meats, for example, work well. Schnitzel, a juicy cutlet pounded to perfection before being breaded and sautéed, is an ideal match, as is goulash, a Hungarianinfluenced, paprika-spiced stew. Spicy Italian sausage, or merguez, North African lamb sausage would also pair beautifully.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Weingut Johann Müllner is located in the medieval town of Krems, a bustling village that, along with the river Krems, gives its name to the region. The Kremstal features three discrete zones that comprise its more than 5,000 acres of vines. The western areas around the river and the town Krems are known for their devilishly rocky soils, while the eastern side features the very different light, compacted loess, which is well-draining but soft. In the south, lying below the majestic Stift Göttweig monastery, which was founded in the 11th century, soils are more loamy and the land is flatter. This is where much of the region’s red wine is grown.
The Wine
Zweigelt (also known as Blauer Zweigelt) is a cross of two grape varieties: St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch. First grafted in 1922, it was originally known as Rotburger, but the name was later changed to honor its creator, Dr. Fritz Zweigelt. Reminiscent of a spicy, herb-tinged Beaujolais, the 2006 Johann Müllner Blauer Zweigelt is a complex, earthy red showcasing quintessential Zweigelt characteristics: black cherry, blue plum, tobacco, graphite, cracked pepper and a floral note that registers somewhere between violet and lavender blossom.
