Origin
Italy's Campagnia region runs along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, from Latium in the north to Basicilicata in the south, and extends inland, where it is bordered by Apulia and Molise. The temperate climate and abundant water make Campania a very rich and fertile region. Agriculture is extensive, but even though Aglianico thrives in the high-altitude volcanic soils, the amount of land currently dedicated to viticulture remains limited.
Pairings
Aglianico is a notoriously late-ripening grape that provides powerful structure, racy acidity and firm tannins. It can exhibit great balance, especially as it matures, showing layers of dark fruit along with intrinsic notes of meat, earth and tar. All of these characteristics ensure that it will pair well with lamb, beef, game and assorted sausages, while standing up to an array of cheeses, including milder blue-veined varieties like Gorganzola and Cambozola.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
D'Antiche Terra is a 100-acre estate in the Avellino province northeast of Mount Vesuvius. After many years of growing grapes for other local producers, in 1993, under the leadership of Gaetano Cicarella, it released its first wine to great critical acclaim. D'Antiche Terra now produces eight separate bottlings made from five different grape varieties.
The Wine
Aglianico is considered one of southern Italy's most important red wines. Due to its ancient roots, it is known as an "archeological" varietal, and its heritage has been a subject of controversy. One widely accepted theory holds that Aglianico was brought to Italy by Greek colonists during the eighth century B.C. Recent DNA testing, however, could find no relation to any known Greek variety. So, the mystery continues. But what we do know is that d'Antiche Terre's 2008 is an excellent example of the varietal and a superb value. It is unusually approachable with aromas and flavors of black raspberry, dusty plum, chocolate, earth and light smoke.
