Origin
The Choapa Valley, where this elegant Syrah originates, typifies the recent vineyard trend in Chile: the movement to ever cooler spots. Part of the larger Coquimbo region, the Choapa Valley sits at the narrowest part of Chile, a very cool area about 200 miles north of Santiago. So far, just over 200 acres have been planted here, comprised mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in vineyards on the Andean foothills. The unique savory and mineral flavors emerging from these wines suggest that this region will be a player in Chile for years to come.
Pairings
Grilled or smoked meats are ideal matches for Syrah, particularly when seasoned with aromatic black pepper or bay leaves. Earthy flavors, like beans and exotic spices, bring out some of the wine’s earthy qualities. Lamb rib chops, as well as most cuts of steak, pork and venison, make worthy partners, as the wine’s excellent acidity and tannins help to balance out their richness.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The De Martino winemaking empire was founded in the 1930s in the Maipo Valley. Pietro De Martino was a recent immigrant from Italy, looking for a place to start a wine business in the New World. Today, the third and fourth generations of De Martinos run the business, which has expanded beyond the Maipo to include winemaking in many of Chile’s most important regions. The winery has always been a trendsetter, having notched accomplishments such as being the first to label a wine as Carmenère after the discovery that the grape had long been misidentified as Merlot. The tradition of innovation has continued, as demonstrated by this wine, which is helping to break ground in a new region.
The Wine
Deep red with black overtones, this Syrah features intense aromas of black cherry and blueberry, backed by hints of violet, stone and spice. The procession of dark berry fruits continues in the mouth, where the intense berry flavor is highlighted by a mineral texture. High-toned baking and oak spice appear in the finish, which is smooth with dense but fine-grained tannins.
