Origin
Dierberg’s estate vineyard exemplifies the California Central Coast’s cool-climate terroir. Planted in 1997, the 160-acre site lies outside the town of Santa Maria, just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Tucked into the southern end of the Santa Maria Valley, it is graced with gentle hillside slopes, sandy loam soils, western exposures and cool afternoon breezes. These elements support a long, gentle ripening, which encourages greater complexity, structure and intensity—the hallmark of great Chardonnay.
Pairings
What really separates this wine from other generous Chardonnays is that the richness and viscosity are seamlessly balanced by bright acidity and a palatecleansing minerality. This ensures that the 2007 Dierberg Chardonnay is not only cellar-worthy and enjoyable to drink on its own, but it also works well with a vast array of foods. Voluptuous New World offerings like this one not only pair well with seafood and poultry, they can—especially as they age—offer enough structure and intensity to stand up to simply prepared meat dishes, especially veal and pork.
Winemaker
Jim and Mary Dierberg, bankers by profession, are not newcomers to the world of wine. In 1974, inspired by many earlier trips to Europe, they purchased the historic Hermannhof Winery in their home state of Missouri. Later, wishing to expand their holdings, they looked to California, where they purchased Star Lane and the properties that now comprise Dierberg Estate. Now, this passionate and energetic couple has just what they call completed their “greatest winemaking tool”: a brilliantly functional, threestory, gravity-flow winery that includes 26,000 square feet of caves and tunnels carved into a sandstone hillside.
The Wine
With tantalizing acidity and modest alcohol, the 2007 vintage is a somewhat more reserved but worthy successor to the 2006 vintage, which garnered rave reviews and sold out quickly. Nick de Luca, a former semi-pro mountain biker and law student turned Dierberg winemaker, describes this bottling as follows: “Immediate impressions of lemon curd and orange blossom are followed by aromas of hazelnut, allspice and Meyer lemon. On the palate, the wine is sleek and refined, with a lithe texture and mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of citrus—lemon rind, tangelo and lemongrass—echo the aromatic impressions of this Chardonnay, creating seamless wine, at once powerful and impeccably balanced.”
