Located at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, Santenay produces medium-weight Pinot Noir with complex flavors of fruit, earth, almonds and minerals. In years past, Santenay has at times suffered from a reputation for producing rustic, coarse wines that lack the suave sophistication of Burgundy's highest-regarded and most expensive wines, but that stereotype is largely outdated. Today Santenay's Premier Cru vineyards produce superb Pinot Noirs that are some of the best bargains in the region.
Hearty, savory dishes with a bit of earthiness will show this wine at its best. Try it with cedar plank salmon, escargots en croute, or any meat dish with mushrooms.
Christiane Bachey has run this domaine, founded by her greatgrandparents, since 1993. The wines are made by her two sons, Lénaïc and Samuel, who take a very hands-on approach to managing the family's 40 acres of vineyards in Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet, which are sustainably farmed and hand-harvested.
This Pinot Noir comes from Domaine Bachey-Legros's prized four acres of old vines in the small Premier Cru Vineyard of Clos Rousseau. In most years, fewer than 900 cases are produced. It has black cherry, licorice, menthol, grilled meat and plum aromas, and flavors of dried cherry, mushroom, redwood and allspice. It's graceful in the mouth, remarkably layered and finishes with tense minerality.
