Origin
Hugging France’s eastern border with Switzerland, the Savoie region runs parallel to Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, and is just over an hour’s drive from Lyon. The area, better known for downhill skiing than viticulture, got its first international exposure when the local town of Albertsville hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics. While the Alpine setting may seem at odds with grape-growing, Savoie has nearly 6,000 acres under vine and dozens of outstanding producers.
Pairings
Jacquère’s fruit, minerality and snappy acidity make it a natural match for a vast array of seafood and shellfish dishes. It is also is a spectacular, palatecleansing accompaniment to milkbased products of all kinds—which is a very good thing, since it just so happens that the Alpine region of Savoie is home to some of the world’s most sublime cheeses, such as Reblochon, Beaufort and Tomme de Savoie. Not surprisingly, Domaine Labbé makes for an ideal match with fondue and Raclette. And, like other penetrating, high-acid wines, it can deftly serve as a counterpoint to the richness of butterand cream-based sauces.

Serve chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
The Roger Labbé winery, located nine miles south of Chambéry, was established in 1975. It started out as a small farmstead that raised cattle and grew various commodities that the land would support. But the family barely subsisted on the property’s modest produce. So two of the sons decided to branch out and planted wine grapes. Their small viticultural endeavor thrived and expanded, and now their low-production wines are marketed globally.
The Wine
The name Abymes refers to the “cru,” or individual vineyard site, on which the grapes are grown. While the appellation permits using up to 10 percent of other grape varieties, the 2009 Abymes is 100 percent Jacquère, a grape variety that grows especially well in the Savoie and accounts for about 75 percent of the region’s production. This bottling is a vibrant expression of Jacquère that features understated apple, pear and pineapple fruit, delicate citrus blossom and stone.
