Origin
Vouvray, a two-hour drive southwest of Paris, is one of the Loire Valley’s 87 officially recognized wine appellations. Located just east of Tours, the Vouvray region sits on the north side of the Loire River, which flows over 600 miles to the Atlantic Ocean from its source in southern France. Due to the region’s finicky northern climate, the wine style here can vary greatly from year to year. In warmer vintages, more sweet wine is produced, while in cooler years production shifts toward drier offerings, including sparkling Vouvray.
Pairings
This wine will generally work in any situation where a dry sparkling would be appropriate. Obviously well-suited as a palate-cleansing aperitif, this crisp sparkling Chenin Blanc also has broad applications with food. A natural companion to dishes featuring highacid ingredients, such as salads with a vinegar- or citrus-based dressing, this wine can also serve as a spectacular counterpoint to rich cream and butter sauces. It also pairs beautifully with fried foods, especially shrimp and vegetable tempura.

Serve chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
After his father’s death in 2006, Young Sébastien Brunet assumed control of Domaine de la Roche Fleurie and quickly achieved rock-star status among the Loire Valley establishment and around the world. Brunet owns 37 acres of Chenin Blanc, all of which are located on the outskirts of the tiny village of Chançay, where he recently carved a new cellar into the same chalky limestone (tuffeau) used as the building blocks of the more than 300 chateaux that dot the surrounding countryside. One of only six organic grape growers in the appellation, Brunet works his parcels by hand, employing only natural vine and soil treatments.
The Wine
The Vouvray appellation is all about Chenin Blanc, which has grown admirably in the region since the fourth century. In a typical vintage, 60 percent of of the harvest is made into still wine and 40 percent into sparkling, and wine styles can range from bone-dry to treacly sweet. A byproduct of 30-year-old vines planted in silexrich clay soils, the mouthwatering Domaine de la Roche Fleurie Vouvray Brut is an exercise in elegance, transparency, crispness and minerality. Complex but understated renditions of apple, citrus blossom and honeycomb emerge from a distant backdrop of fresh pear, almond and stone.
