Origin
Originating in the Swiss Alps, the Rhône River runs through one of France’s most celebrated wine regions. Rhône Valley vineyards straddle the river for 125 miles from Vienne in the north to just below Avignon in the south. While the northern half produces red wines made entirely of Syrah, the Southern Rhône region favors blends based on the Grenache grape. The area’s fast-draining soils, a mixture of limestone and clay, and its Mediterranean climate produce vibrant, concentrated wines.
Pairings
While this charming Rhône blend of old-vine Grenache and Syrah provides a low-key backdrop to full-flavored pork and poultry, it will really shine in the presence of duck, lamb or game. The wine’s roundness, restrained tannins and modest alcohol levels also allow it to embrace spicier preparations. It is a superb accompaniment to youthful soft and semi-hard cheeses, as well as smoked and cured meats.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Domaine André Aubert is one of the holdings of the industrious Aubert brothers, who also own Domaine Autrand and Domaine le Grand Retour. They took over the family business in 1981 and have expanded it gradually ever since, with the addition of new properties as well as major improvements and modernizations in the winery, allowing them to make wine that is the very model of contemporary Côtes du Rhône wine. That is, it has all of the spice, earth, pepper and soul you’d expect from this region, but its rustic coarseness has been ironed out into a smooth and savory package.
The Wine
Grenache and Syrah, traditional partners in the Southern Rhône, are the main players in this wine. Old-vine Grenache provides red fruit aromas, suppleness and charm, while Syrah offers deeper color, depth, earthy dark fruit flavors and notes of olives and black pepper. This blend exhibits aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, plum, light earth, thyme and lavender. It is bright, with surprising impact and complexity.
