Pouilly-Fuissé is a classic and accessible expression of Burgundian Chardonnay that became quite popular in the U.S. in the 1970s, then faded as quickly as it had appeared. Today's Pouilly-Fuissé is better than ever and can still deliver remarkable value. It hails from a subregion of the Maconnais region of Burgundy that boasts primarily limestone and alkaline clay soils, and the wines are made from 100 percent Chardonnay grapes.
A balanced, moderately oaked white Burgundy like this one will pair well with any medium-weight dish. Rich fish and citrus or herb-inflected chicken recipes are great matches, as are any dishes with corn, garlic, nuts, shellfish, butter or melted cheeses.
At Domaine Cornin, Dominique and Romain Cornin continue the work of their father and grandfather, tending to the vines of this small estate with the help of their stout draft horse, Coccinelle (French for "ladybug"). Their Pouilly-Fuissé is truly handmade. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, not only without artificial pesticides or fertilizers, but even without heavy machinery that would compact the soil.
This Chardonnay is easy to appreciate. It has a subtle, complex nose of pollen, nectarine, lemon curd, apricot, pineapple and lemon zest, with a faint spicy note from toasted oak barrels. It is superbly balanced and has flavors of white peach, limestone, lilac and lemon with a slightly nutty finish.
