Saint-Joseph is located in the northern half of the Rhône Valley, where the southern regional preference for Grenache gives way to plantings of Syrah for red wines. The first vineyards here were planted by the Jesuits in the latter half of the 17th century in a vineyard called Saint-Joseph (which is now owned by E. Guigal). It was recognized as an official appellation in 1956 and is known for producing some of the most peppery, elegant and fresh wines of the northern Rhône.
Lamb's gaminess matches well with Syrah, as does smoked meat or fish. Seasonings like black and white pepper, coriander, cumin, mint and bay leaves will really resonate with the E. Guigal.
E. Guigal was established in 1946 by étienne Guigal, who had previously worked at Vidal Fleury, and today the Guigal family is one of the largest and most respected wine producers in the Rhône Valley. E. Guigal is particularly known for its single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie wines, La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque, but it produces uniformly excellent wines from throughout the valley and practices organic and biodynamic viticulture in its extensive vineyard holdings. Today the winemaking is supervised by Philippe Guigal.
This taut red has a nose of fresh violets, blackberry, black cherry, licorice and forest floor, and flavors of blood orange, blackberry brambles, menthol, black pepper and an iron-rich red meat note that the Syrahs of the northern Rhône are famous for. The 2005 vintage was terrific, and this wine has very good aging potential.
