Rioja is the Spanish equivalent of Bordeaux--a vast region producing large quantities of superb export-quality wine that can be found and enjoyed all over the world. Rioja has a mix of Atlantic and Continental weather patterns. Its clay and limestone soils consistently produce Tempranillo grapes, Spain's most important indigenous variety, which are at the heart of the country's most refined and revered wines.
Good Rioja is as versatile with food as Pinot Noir, but it does fare particularly well with grilled, braised or roasted meats from pork to lamb, dishes with mushrooms, and sausage or rabbit paella.
Friends Tom Puyaubert, David Sampedro and Javier Gomez first bonded over their shared love of rugby, and then hatched the idea of starting their own winery. They purchased 15 acres of mature vineyards in Rioja Alavesa and founded Exopto Cellars in 2003. Puyaubert is the Spanish general manager for Demptos, a French barrel cooperage, and Sampedro is an up-and-coming winemaker who is increasingly in demand to make wine for other wineries.
The 2007 B.B. (short for "Big Bang") is a blend of 50% Garnacha (Grenache), 40% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, the three classic grapes of Rioja. It has aromas of fresh red raspberry fruit, violet, menthol, blackberry, pepper and tobacco and supple blueberry and black cherry flavors that finish quite clean, with little obvious oak.
