The Eola-Amity Hills are situated in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley, a quick 45-minute drive from Portland. They are made of volcanic basalt; the tops of the ridges have thin top soils and the lower areas have deeper sedimentary soils. This sub-zone of Willamette Valley is influenced by cool ocean breezes in the afternoon that preserve Pinot Noir's fresh, bright flavors.
This Pinot Noir is a good match for meats with a bit of gaminess, like lamb and duck, or dishes that feature mushrooms, fruit compote or Dijon mustard.
Expression is the new Pinot Noir venture of William Hill, a vintner who developed a number of renowned mountain vineyards in Napa Valley during the 1980s. Under this new label, he is releasing a series of singlevineyard Pinot Noirs from outstanding Pinot Noir regions at several different latitudes: Santa Barbara County, Anderson Valley in Northern California and Oregon's Willamette Valley. Willamette Valley, at a latitude of 44 degrees, is the northernmost of the three regions.
This pretty red shows the restraint and complexity that has brought recognition to Oregon Pinot Noir. It has candied cherry, anise, cola, mocha and nutmeg aromas with a delicate earthy mushroom note. In the mouth it shows fresh bing cherry, rhubarb pie, vanilla and Earl Grey tea flavors.
