Origin
One of the most prominent geographical features of the southern Rhône is Mont Ventoux, a large, bald mountain sitting between the regions of Provence and the Rhône. Famous for providing grueling climbs for cyclists in the Tour de France, Ventoux also boasts lower foothills whose clay-limestone soils are wonderful for pithy, deeply-flavored reds. Winemakers in the southern Rhône realized long ago that blending Grenache and Syrah together would result in a better wine than either grape could make alone. Juicy, fruity Grenache softens Syrah’s muscular tannins, while Syrah adds structure and heft to supple Grenache.
Pairings
Like other wines with gamy notes, typical of Rhône reds and many Syrah blends, the Arnoux Ventoux pairs beautifully with lamb and other gamy meats like squab or even wild boar. The wine’s smoky notes make it a natural for pairing with grilled foods, including char-grilled steaks and chops. Play off the wine’s herbaceous notes with flavorings of fresh herbs such as tarragon, thyme, parsley and oregano.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
The Arnoux family has been making wine continuously in the southern Rhône since the family was deeded vineyard land in 1717. While the family’s own vineyards cover almost 100 acres, demand for their excellent wines forced them to expand beyond their locale in the famous wine town of Vacqueyras by buying grapes from trusted growers and vinifying the wines to their style. Among their vineyard holdings in Ventoux, Domaine de Sandilaure is a special old vine plot, whose wine is not blended into the larger cuvée but instead bottled separately to stand on its own merits.
The Wine
Compelling black currant and spice aromas have a savory, smoky inflection redolent of meat roasting over a flame. Stout but not brawny, this wine holds its considerable power in check and lingers in the mouth long after the last sip. Blackberry, plum and game flavors gather intensity on a ripe palate accented with charcoal, orange and fresh thyme notes. It’s a poised wine, with a pleasing depth and complexity that emerge with air, and it shows lovely texture and length.
