Origin
Toro, located in the Duero River Valley in a region of eastern Spain known as Old Castile, is known for its reds, which are generally made from Tinto de Toro. A locally adapted variation of Tempranillo, Tinto de Toro ripens a few weeks earlier and has a thicker skin than Tempranillo from Rioja. Toro’s vineyards are mostly found at altitudes of 2,000 to 2,500 feet, which produce bold Tempranillo wines with deep color, ultraripe fruit and ample tannin.
Pairings
The concentrated flavors, smoky accents and tannic structure of this wine call for hearty meats with bold seasonings. Roasts and stews traditional to Spain, particularly those featuring pork, lamb or spicy chorizo, make a fine place to start. Or think of those ingredients in the wonderful char of a paella cooked over a fire. Grilled peppers, thick-cut steaks or a roast leg of lamb will also stand up to the wine without overwhelming it.

Decant for two hours before serving at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Bodega del Palacio de los Frontaura y Victoria, also referred to simply as Bodegas Frontaura, is a family-owned winery in the town of Villabuena del Puente in the wine region of Toro. The families of Frontaura and Victoria have been important in Toro winemaking going back all the way to the 1600s. The name of the wine brand comes from the name engraved above the doorway to the family’s ancient palace, whose restoration into a tasting room and art gallery was part of the wine brand’s redevelopment process. A modern winery was also constructed, and the fusion of the ancient and the modern has also become a good way to describe the family’s winemaking.
The Wine
The Bodegas Frontaura Crianza comes from the estate’s 250-acre vineyard planting called Pago de Valdelacasa in the town of Villabuena del Puente. The gentle, long slopes here are made up of predominantly calcareous clay soils, ideal for Tempranillo. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, then aged in new French and American oak casks for approximately 13 months —so this vintage has had five years to mature in bottle. And it shows: its primary dark fruit character is still prominent, though a savory depth is emerging, featuring woodsy, gamy tones and a gorgeous, chocolatey depth.
