Origin
Tucked up near the northeast corner of Spain, the Terra Alta region is located 100 miles southwest of Barcelona. Long considered a wine region to watch, it received official DO (Denominación de Origen) status in 1987. The climate, a combination of continental and Mediterranean, is drier and warmer than the nearby wine regions of Montsant and Priorat. Unfertile, fast-draining soils, composed of limestone and clay, contribute mightily to the production of flavorful, concentrated wines.
Pairings
Even though the Ludovicus is more flexible and food-friendly than many other substantial red wines, it is still most comfortable sharing the table with lamb or beef. But it is also an excellent match for leaner, medium-weight proteins, like pork, veal or feathered game. Incorporating fresh or dried fruits will play to the wine’s fruit flavors. And while it is a suitable partner for countless small-plate appetizers and lightly aged cheeses, it is also a satisfying stand-alone libation that can be enjoyed before and after, as well as during, a meal.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
In this remote, southernmost portion of Catalonia, the winemaking tradition dates back to the second century when the Romans first planted grapes there. The 100-acre estate of Cellar Piñol is located in the town of Batea, which sits at an elevation of approximately 1,600 feet. The family business was founded in 1945 by Terra Alta native Josep Arrufi, but it was his granddaughter Josefiña Piñol and her son, the winemaker Juanjo Galcera Piñol, who helped catapult the winery—and the region—to new heights.
The Wine
Named in tribute to the Roman soldier who first planted vines in the area, Cellar Piñol’s Ludovicus is made from organic, estate-grown grapes. This unique blend weaves together Grenache, Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Aromas of ripe plum, black cherry, blueberry and black raspberry set the stage for a mouthful of succulent, spicy dark fruit flavors, with a dash of white pepper and a pleasing earthy, herbal edge. Ripe and robust (yet by no means sweet or coarse), this wine, as one impressed taster exclaimed, “delivers a lot of love for the price point!”
