Origin
Sicily, located just two miles from the southwestern tip of the Italian mainland, is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. As the Greeks understood as early as the eighth century BC, Sicily’s climate, topography and volcanic soils are uniquely suited to growing grapes. Sicily has long been known for Marsala and bulk wines exported to other parts of Italy for blending, but a new generation of winemakers has begun to realize Sicily’s extraordinary potential for producing world-class table wines.
Pairings
Vivid flavors, supple mid-palate and mouthwatering crispness are the hallmarks of carefully crafted dry Inzolia. These characteristics ensure that it will pair flawlessly with many salads and vegetarian dishes, as well as fresh, simply prepared seafood, most notably shellfish. The wine’s mineral backbone and brisk acidity will serve as a counterpoint to richer fish dishes, while also standing up to higher-acid preparations, such as those incorporating tomatoes or citrus juices. Consider ceviche or a Mediterranean-style seafood salad.

Serve chilled (50°F).
Winemaker
The Sireci family has tended the vines at Feudo Montoni since it was first established in the 16th century. Located near the center of the island, the 175acre estate sits in the renowned Contea di Sclafani DOC, where the fertile lands of the Polermo, Caltanissetta and Agrigento regions intersect. These vineyards, at an average altitude of 2,000 feet, are spared the scorching summer heat experienced at lower elevations; this allows the grapes to ripen slowly and completely while retaining freshness and bright acidity.
The Wine
The Colle del Mandorlo is comprised of 100 percent Inzolia, a grape variety believed to be indigenous to Sicily. Once used primarily as a component of Marsala, today it is recognized for its ability to produce delightfully satisfying dry white wines. This bright, juicy offering from the 2010 vintage leads with aromas of melon, green apple, citrus blossom and a whiff of white pepper. Offering welcome structure and weight on the palate, this harmonious charmer is layered and intricate, with flavors of slightly underripe peach, white flowers, Asian pear and lemongrass. It finishes with a pleasing, dusty sensation that is reminiscent of the volcanic soils in which it is grown.
