Origin
When people think of Italy, they often picture the olive groves, cypress trees and hillside vineyards of Tuscany. Located in central Italy between the Apennine mountains to the north and east, and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, Tuscany is the heart of Italy. And this wine, from the area around the idyllic hilltop town of Cortona—made famous in the book and film “Under the Tuscan Sun”—is from the deepest interior part of Tuscany, where warmer inland temperatures and attractively poor soils have produced celebrates wines since antiquity.
Pairings
This Merlot’s smooth tannins, juicy fruit and earthy, spice-laden character make for a broad range of food-pairing options. Both lean and fatty cuts of pork, veal and beef will match the wine’s full structure. Among the most traditional of Tuscan dishes is a pork roast, and its crackling skin and flavorful meat will be well served by the Villa Loggio Merlot. Let the wine’s generous fruit and earthy flavors direct the ingredients: mushrooms, fennel, juniper berries, root vegetables and most dried green herbs will complement the wine.

Decant for one hour before serving at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
Villa Loggio represents the combined efforts of a number of European wine enthusiasts who discovered the ancient villa and vineyards of the Venutis, Cortona’s most important family in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was for sale. Of course, winemaking in the region goes back much farther than that: amphorae and other wine vessels have been unearthed from Etruscan civilization, 800 years before the rise of Rome. Today’s approach at Villa Loggio, however, is much more modern. Under the guidance of the celebrated consulting winemaker Stefano Chioccioli, the estate was planted primarily to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
The Wine
Despite its ubiquity in the marketplace, truly great Merlot has only been proven to consistently grow in a handful of places. Tuscany is indisputably one of them, as it has pockets of the necessary low-nutrient, clay-limestone soils that Merlot favors, as well as a moderate climate. This Merlot is substantial, with flavors of black cherries and currants, baked plum, dried herbs and oak spice. Its style is ripe and succulent, though it has well-rounded tannins and a long, focused finish.
