Origin
A 90-minute drive north of San Francisco, Mendocino County is one California’s largest, oldest and most diverse wine-producing regions. Mendocino County, with its 10 sub-appellations, nails down the northernmost fringes of California’s famed North Coast AVA. While still best known for lumber and marijuana production, grape growing has emerged, at least on paper, as the major cash crop. Long called “America’s Greenest Wine Region,” Mendocino County continues to lead the country in organic and biodynamic viticulture.
Pairings
A mutation of the red Pinot Noir grape, Pinot Grigio has been enjoyed for centuries and is arguably the world’s most popular and widely disseminated wine. It is made in a variety of styles and works well with a mind-boggling array of foods. Fuller interpretations, like Monte Volpe’s, not only work extremely well with light-to-medium-bodied seafood and shellfish dishes, but can also stand up to chicken and light meats, especially those with simple, high-acid preparations. A classic pairing: fried calamari with a squeeze of lemon.

Serve well chilled (45°F).
Winemaker
The Graziano family has been growing grapes and making wine in Mendocino County since 1918, when Vincenzo Graziano immigrated from Italy’s Piedmont region to the Redwood Valley. Two generations later, after studying oenology and viticulture at U.C. Davis, grandson Gregory Graziano formally began his career at the Milano Winery in Hopland. In 1986, at the age of 32, Greg received national acclaim for the bold, cuttingedge wines he fashioned at La Crema Winery, some of which were served at the White House and the Moscow Summit. Today, in addition to several consulting contracts, Greg focuses on four of his own labels: Graziano, Saint Gregory, Enotria and Monte Volpe.
The Wine
Greg Graziano remains a tireless force in the Cal-Ital movement as wine drinkers across the country benefit from his curiosity, passion and inability to establish meaningful boundaries. Whether it’s an acre of Aglianico or a couple of rows of Falanghina, the guy just can’t say “no.” At harvest time his winery bursts at the seams with more than 130 distinct lots while bottling as many as 45 different wines! One of them is this crisp Pinot Grigio, most of which is grown on Graziano’s 15-acre estate in Potter Valley. With classic aromas and flavors of white peach, pear, orange peel and almond, this medium-bodied gem offers surprising weight on the palate, but never betrays its lively nature.
