Origin
Originating in the Swiss Alps, the Rhône River runs through one of France's most celebrated wine regions. Rhône Valley vineyards straddle the river for 125 miles from Vienne in the north to just below Avignon in the south. Taulignan, a walled medieval village and home to Domaine Gris des Bauries, is located 30 miles north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, near the boundary between the southern and northern Rhône Valley. The area's fast-draining soils, a mixture of limestone and clay, and its Mediterranean climate produce vibrant, concentrated wines.
Pairings
While this charming Rhône blend of old-vine Grenache and Syrah provides a low-key backdrop to full-flavored grilled meats and game, it's best suited to pork and poultry. The wine's roundness, restrained tannins and modest alcohol levels also allow it to embrace spicier preparations. It is a superb accompaniment to youthful soft and semi-hard cheeses, as well as smoked and cured meats.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Winemaker
In almost fairy-tale fashion, Domaine Gris des Bairies is the story of a renowned stonemason, Patrick, who fell in love with the local baker's daughter, Gina, and now lives his dream of tending his own vineyards and crafting his own wines. In 2004, Patrick and Gina partnered up with another couple, for whom Patrick had built a wine cellar, and founded this small-production winery that has quickly gained a reputation for juicy, over-achieving wines.
The Wine
With an average vine age of 25 years, the two main varietals grown at Domaine des Gris des Bauries's 29-acre estate are local favorites: Grenache and Syrah, affectionately known here as the Duo des Archaux. The old-vine Grenache provides red fruit aromas, suppleness and charm, while Syrah offers deeper color, earthy dark fruit flavors and notes of white and black pepper. This offering exhibits aromas and flavors of blackberry, black currant, plum, light earth, tarragon and lavender. It is bright, with surprising impact and intensity. Opening the wine an hour before serving will give it time to open and unfold, while rounding out its youthful exuberance.
