The Adelaide Hills winegrowing region is cool, coastal and relatively small. It lies just to the southeast of the city of Adelaide, with picturesque rolling hills planted to vineyards or left to grazing cattle. The region successfully grows a handful of varieties, from Sauvingnon Blanc to Cabernet Sauvignon to Shiraz. Sauvignon Blanc from this region is particularly interesting--moderately ripe, with distinctive white flower aromas and clean, citrusy flavors.
Excellent as an aperitif or with a salad course, this Sauvignon Blanc will also pair beautifully with all manner of seafood, especially shellfish or white fish seasoned with fresh herbs or finished with a fruit salsa.
Groom wines are produced by Lisa and Daryl Groom. Daryl is a native Aussie and was the longtime winemaker for Geyser Peak in Sonoma County. Daryl still lives in Sonoma County and is a partner in a new San Francisco winery, Foggy Bridge. Daryl has always had a deft hand at making clean, refreshing Sauvignon Blanc with intense flavor.
The crisp, unoaked 2009 Groom Sauvignon Blanc has a lovely nose of lemon blossom, clover, nectarine, honeydew and grapefruit, and pure, clean, medium-weight white grapefruit, kaffir lime, Seville orange and mineral flavors.
