Origin
The Petaluma Gap is located at the southern end of the Sonoma Coast appellation in Sonoma County, Calif. This northwest-southeast running valley offers a break in the Coastal Range and, funneling cool Pacific air and fog inland, serves as a major air-conditioning vent for southern Sonoma County. With elevations as high as 840 feet, the Gap's Crown is a 140-acre vineyard perched on the western edge of Sonoma Mountain, where ideal exposure; rocky fast-draining soils; and the cooling effects of the Petaluma Gap offer ideal growing conditions for world-class Pinot Noir.
Pairings
Showcasing Pinot Noir's charming and seductive nature, the 2008 Gap's Crown offers exceptional flexibility with a huge spectrum ingredients and cooking methods. It promises to stand up nicely to poultry and lighter red meats, while not overwhelming many seafood and vegetarian dishes. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger and coriander will echo the wine's inherent spiciness, while fresh herbs and garlic play to its earthy side.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F). Decant one hour before serving.
Winemaker
Bryan Harrington is an artist, and Pinot Noir is his medium. While tending bar in San Francisco, Bryan traveled to Europe and was enchanted by the Burgundian notion of small producers tending tiny vineyard plots, crafting a few barrels of wine that eloquently expressed the unique characteristics of those sites. Now Harrington brings a rare combination of intelligence, passion and humility to making small-production wines of remarkable poise and distinction. At a modest winery in San Francisco, he makes fewer than a thousand cases of Pinot Noir every year from five different vineyard sources. Each is a labor of love...;and a work of art.
The Wine
Among the most charming of Harrington's menagerie of Pinot Noirs, the 2008 Gap's Crown offers spiced plum, black cherry and raspberry fruit with notes of baking spice, cola, Mandarin orange and forest floor. It is rich and supple on the palate, with ripe tannins and balanced acidity providing refreshing vitality and lift.
