Origin
When George W. and Margaret Hendry purchased the original 120 acres back in 1939 and founded the Henry ranch, grapes had already been growing on the property for 80 years. The unique Napa Valley location, midway between the cool climes of Carneros and the warmer Yountville district, provides ideal growing conditions for a remarkably broad spectrum of grape types. With 11 different varieties planted on 117 acres, the Hendry family has, based on variations of soil, exposure and clonal selection, divided the vineyard into 50 distinct blocks, each of which is managed separately.
Pairings
Ultimately, it is the balance of fruit, acid, alcohol and tannins that make this Zinfandel from Block 28 so unique, memorable and delightfully food-friendly. It is a natural match for most medium-to full-bodied dishes, especially those that are grilled, braised or smoked. While most red meats are a classic pairing, this wine can also easily accompany many poultry and feathered-game preparations. And no need to hold back on the seasonings: It will stand up to green olives, capers, roasted red peppers, onions, black pepper and plenty of garlic.

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
George O. Hendry, the son of founder George W., might as well have been born with a pair of pruning shears in his hands. He has lived on the ranch and tended its grapevines his entire life, and he continues to oversee the operation of the vineyard and winery. A nuclear physicist by trade, whose day job is designing and manufacturing particle accelerators, George relies on a capable and dedicated team to manage the day-to-day details at the winery. With each employee having been on the job for an average of 20 years, it's easy to imagine how this incredibly complex and ambitious enterprise continues to maintain its reputation for uncompromising excellence.
The Wine
At a time when most American Zinfandels are crafted with a bigger-is-better mentality, Hendry's finely hewn offering from Block 28 is a breath of fresh air. This 4-acre block, located on benchlands west of the town of Napa, benefits from morning fog and cool afternoon breezes moving up-valley from the northern reaches of San Francisco Bay. Under these unique conditions, the grapes reach ripeness before sugar levels (and ultimately alcohol levels) get too high. The result is a very savory, classically structured Zinfandel that offers measured doses of berry and black cherry fruit, along with subtle notes of licorice, camphor, chocolate, graphite, dried herbs and assorted baking spices.
