Origin
A part of Burgundy, Beaujolais has a different climate (warmer) and a different soil (granite) than the rest of that region. The area’s finest wines come from 10 villages designated as cru, one of which is Brouilly, where the century-old Henry Fessy domaine is based. While Côtes de Brouilly, another cru of Beaujolais, covers hillside slopes, Brouilly is at the base of the hill, where vines grown in granite and calcareous clay produce a robust, fruity red wine.
Pairings
One of the joys of Beaujolais is that it goes with just about everything. Few wines rival Gamay’s ability to embrace a broad array of ingredients and food styles. Its flexibility makes it the perfect accompaniment to a potluck. From deviled eggs to pasta, from Caesar salad to pizza or spare ribs, Beaujolais is there. It is also a standard with turkey and stuffing and a welcome addition to any brunch featuring quiche, eggs Benedict, or omelets with Gruyère and chives. Thanks to its depth of flavor, this Brouilly can even hold its own with thinner cuts of steak, sausages and lamb.

Serve at cool room temperature (64°F).
Decant for 30 minutes before serving.
Winemaker
The history of Henry Fessy dates back to the late 19th century, when the Fessy family purchased vines in the Beaujolais region. It was a period just after phylloxera, when all the vines in Europe had been decimated, and vineyard land was cheaply priced—within reach for even families of modest means. Based in Brouilly, the Fessy family was, over time, able to extend the reach of their domaine, covering land in other areas. Today, it’s one of the largest landholders in Beaujolais, making wine in nine of the 10 crus. In 2008, Henry Fessy was purchased by Maison Louis Latour of Burgundy, which continues to operate it in much the same fashion that made it successful over the last century.
The Wine
Made from the Gamay grape, the reds of Beaujolais are some of the most drinkable, delightful and food-friendly reds in the world. Experts consider 2009 the greatest Beaujolais vintage in recent memory. Classic aromas of spiced plum, blackberry and violet lead to a fruity palate filled with cherry, cranberry and pepper. The structure has Brouilly’s traditional granitic depth, wrapped in all that lovely, voluptuous fruit.
