Origin
South Australia is to Australia what California is to the United States: ground zero of that country’s wine trade. South Australia produces 60 percent of Australia’s total wine output and is home to many of the country’s most famous wine regions, including Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley. The region’s hallmark is its vast geographic and climatic diversity, which enables it to produce a staggering range of grape varieties and wine styles.
Pairings
Although quite versatile, Shriaz prefers to dine high up on the food chain, and this offering is no exception. Its rich, jammy and herbal characteristics provide a plethora of pairing opportunities, especially with robust braised dishes and virtually any grilled or smoked meat. Without excessive tannins or screeching acidity, this wine is also a worthy accompaniment to spicier preparations, such as Korean sizzling beef or roast pork with mole sauce. But, above all else, this wine loves a good barbecue!

Serve at cool room temperature (62°F).
Winemaker
Hill of Content is the brainchild of John Larchet, an Irish-born advertising executive turned winemaker. He summed up his business model this way: “Hill of Content was born out of my desire to create interesting, regionally specific wines at a price that allows for ‘liberal’ consumption.” He added: “The name translates as ‘Hill of Happiness,’ referring to a state of mind rather than a geographic place.” Armed with a legendary palate and strong relationships with many of Australia’s most respected growers, he travels across the country tasting and procuring wines that he combines into luscious, affordable blends.
The Wine
Sourced from low-yielding vineyards in South and Western Australia—Clare Valley and Margaret River, respectively— the 2008 Hill of Content Shiraz features an enchanting combination of aromas including blackberry, raspberry and blueberry jam, along with nuances of earth and spice. Full-bodied and opulent on the palate, the wine delivers bushels of black and red fruit. Aging in two-year-old French cooperage enhanced the wine’s texture while rounding out any rough edges. With ripe tannins and moderate acidity, this wine is a joy to consume on its own, or as an amiable year-round companion to many foods.
