Cool is the rule when it comes to growing the tart, tangy fruit that makes great sparkling wine. Green Valley is a cool sub-region of the Russian River Valley, which itself is a cool sub-region of Sonoma County. Near the coast, Green Valley sees fog coming off the cold Pacific Ocean almost daily. The fog delays warming until the midday sun prevails, and then often returns in the early evening. This area is also known for its sought-after Goldridge soil, a yellowish sandy loam ideal for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
This racy bubbly with hints of underlying red fruit is an ideal counterbalance to salty and fried foods, from potato chips and popcorn shrimp to calamari, fresh oysters, apple fritters or rich liver mousse paté.
Iron Horse has been a quality leader in California sparkling wine since Audrey and Barry Sterling purchased the property in 1976. Driving down Ross Station Road, they were sure they were lost until they crested the knoll and the view opened up to 300 acres of gentle rolling hills lined by a wall of trees that looked like Camelot to them. Incurable romantics with an extraordinary vision, they bought the property two weeks later. Today, their daughter Joy is the CEO and their son Laurence is the director of operations.
This vibrant sparkler has aromas of apple and pear blossom, kirsch and eggy, fresh-baked brioche bread with reserved flavors of red apple, yellow cherries, cream and pistachio nuts. Compared with other California sparkling wines, this one is relatively wiry and more Champenois in style.
