Origin
Located on the east coast of the South Island, Marlborough is one of New Zealand's sunniest and driest areas. Shallow, stony, low-fertility soils reduce vigor, decrease yields and produce delightfully crisp, aromatic wines. Serious planting did not begin here until the late 1970s, but since then unexpected international demand has fueled rapid expansion. Today, with nearly 60,000 acres under vine, Marlborough has established itself as a reliable source for affordable, world-class Sauvignon Blanc.
Pairings
This lively, slightly herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc fares well with dishes that are aromatic, spicy and high in acidity. It is not only an excellent accompaniment to salads, soups and green vegetable dishes, it can comfortably serve as a counterpoint to richer seafood preparations and can cut through lighter cream- and butter-based sauces. Classic pairings include Caesar salad, herbed goat cheese bruschetta, and fresh, tangy ceviche.

Serve well chilled (47°F).
Winemaker
Michael Tiller, a retired airline pilot, and his wife, Robyn, established Isabel Estate Vineyard in 1982. For over a decade, they operated as contract grape growers supplying some of Marlborough's leading wine producers. But in 1994, encouraged by the quality of their fruit and the unbridled success of their neighbors, the Tillers decided to start producing and marketing their own wine under the Isabel Estate label. The wines are currently crafted by Patricia Miranda. A native of Maipo Valley, Chile, Miranda brings experience from many of the world's wine regions, including Washington's Yakima Valley; Napa Valley; Sancerre, France; and Germany's Mosel region.
The Wine
Exuberant aromas of grapefruit, under-ripe pineapple, citrus blossom, green grass and bell pepper give way to a medley of tangy citrus fruit flavors. This zesty, well-balanced Sauvignon Blanc also offers background notes of sea breeze as well as savory mineral tones. Rumor has it that the folks at Isabel believe this vintage is the finest Sauvignon Blanc they have ever made. And that is high praise, indeed.
