Origin
From its source in the Cévennes Mountains of southern France, the Loire River flows over 600 miles to the Atlantic Ocean. The Sancerre appellation, located 120 miles south of Paris, envelops the village of Sancerre (sahn-SEHR) and 13 others in the easternmost reaches of the Loire Valley region. While small amounts of red and rosée wines are produced here, the area is renowned for it crisp, chalky interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc.
Pairings
Sancerre is one of Loire Valley's most famous wines and considered a quintessential expression of Sauvignon Blanc, in all its chalky, high-acid glory. As such, this wine fares well with higher-acid preparations, especially those involving lemon or grapefruit, and the judicious use of fresh herbs will complement its natural herbal quality. It loves shellfish and lighter seafood, but can also be used as a counterpoint to white meat dishes with fairly rich, creamy sauces. Coquilles St. Jacques (scallops with a lemon butter sauce) and toast points with herbed goat cheese are considered classic accompaniments.

Serve lightly chilled (52°F).
Winemaker
Domaine Jean Reverdy is just outside the village of Verdigny, which is home to some of Sancerre's most lauded vineyards. Dating back to 1650, the 30-acre estate has been worked continuously by family hands for 10 generations. Now Christophe Reverdy, son of the late Jean Reverdy, produces around 8,000 cases per year, 70 percent of which is exported to wine drinkers around the world.
The Wine
The Jean Reverdy Sancerre is comprised of 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc from a single vineyard, with chalky soil and a minimum vine age of 25 years. To preserve its pure, racy character, the wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and has not seen so much as a splinter of oak. Fresh and lively aromas of melon, white currant, citrus blossom, lemon rind, lime and mineral rise from the glass. On the palate, assorted citrus fruits, green apple, lemongrass, sage and chalk flavors manage to be lush yet delicate. Offering both richness and wellfocused poise, this wine's irresistible charms will appeal to Sancerre veterans, as well as those just now discovering this treasure of the Loire Valley.
